A friend pointed out that many of our posts late last year were centered in and around Staunton (our home base) – wondering if we do work outside of the region… Of course we do! Churchville Avenue Lights

The City of Staunton recently completed a substantial project along Churchville Avenue, including the installation of quite a few streetlights.  The lights are designed to cast light only down (towards the paving) in order to minimize waste and light pollution.  This photo show how they work.

With a long interest in night photography, I wanted to try out how this would work from a plane instead of a tripod… Not easy: the pane’s shake and motion requires a fast shutter speed, which means that the aperture has to be opened up as wide as possible onto a sensor with the ISO maxed out. So the images are a little noisy if you are a pixel peeper – but otherwise really cool!
